Lorde: I’ve Turned Down “Tens of Millions of Dollars…Saying No to Things”

fter an attractive female teen pop star tops the charts, endorsement deals and acting roles usually follow, as do perfume and clothing lines.  But Lorde is one 17-year-old pop star who's not having any of that: she claims that since she became a star, she's rejected boatloads of cash to do things that are "corny."

Speaking to The New York Times, which dubs her "The Upstart," Lorde talks about the fact that unlike some young stars, she's completely in control of the way she's presented to the public, on stage, in photos and in her videos, and she never, as the Times puts it, "flirts" with the camera. "The phrase ‘teen hottie’ literally makes me want to throw up,” she says, adding that she wants her message for her fans to be "about strength and about power."

“I would like to think that my public persona comes naturally to me and isn’t that dissimilar to my real way of doing things,” she says. “I’ve turned down easily tens of millions of dollars doing what I do and saying no to things that I think are corny.”

One of those things, she revealed last year, was the chance to open for Katy Perry on the singer's upcoming world tour.  Lorde doesn't go into details about other opportunities she passed on.
